Principal Advisor
Strategy and Markets Lead
Sean King is the Strategy and Markets Lead at SPA Australia, where he focuses on how SPA brings its capabilities to market, strengthens client relationships, and positions the organisation to support government priorities and emerging needs. He brings a broad perspective to this role, having led each of SPA Australia’s practice groups at times during the past decade: Commercial, Legal, Consulting and Defence & Analytics.
Sean founded Proximity Advisory Services in 2011 and helped build it into one of Australia’s most respected government advisory firms, which was acquired by SPA in 2025. He remains passionate about SPA’s ability to combine strategy, commercial, legal and analytical expertise to solve complex public-sector challenges.
Sean is highly regarded by clients as a strategic advisor and lawyer to government, with particular expertise in procurement, commercial advisory, technology projects, and Defence acquisition and sustainment. While his current role is primarily focused on market engagement and growth, Sean continues to support selected client work where his experience and insight add the greatest value. Sean brings a practical, outcomes‑focused approach grounded in strong governance, commercial acumen and a deep understanding of government decision‑making.
Sean has supported some of Australia’s most significant government initiatives, including multi-billion-dollar capability acquisitions and nationally significant technology programs. His work has included assisting the Australian Government to acquire the largest ships ever operated by the Royal Australian Navy; delivering major technology initiatives such as Defence’s next-generation desktop upgrade and high-frequency communications capability; establishing whole-of-government technology procurement arrangements for the Digital Transformation Agency; and supporting the establishment of the National Centre for the Prevention of Child Sexual Abuse.
Sean holds a Bachelor of Computer Engineering, a Bachelor of Law, and qualifications in business and negotiation. He has received several awards during his career and is recognised by Best Lawyers for Commercial Law and Government Practice, and by Doyle’s Guide for Corporate, Commercial & Procurement.
Sean lives with Kim and their two sons, Hugo and Oscar. He is a lover of the outdoors and can regularly be found hiking, biking, kayaking, skiing or horse riding with friends and family.
