Leading Australian bureaucrat puts retirement on hold to join Proximity

Commercial, Consulting, Legal

Podcast

We are delighted to announce that senior public servant, Glenys Beauchamp has joined the Proximity team as a Principal Advisor.

Glenys has joined Proximity after retiring from the Australian Public Service earlier this year after 10 years at the Secretary level. She was Secretary of the Department of Health from 2017 to 2020 but returned to assist the Australian Government procure personal protective equipment for the health system during the COVID‑19 pandemic.

She was Secretary of the Department of Industry, Innovation and Science (2013–2017) and Secretary of the Department of Regional Australia, Local Government, Arts and Sport (2010–2013). She served as Deputy Secretary in the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet (2009–2010) and the Department of Families, Housing, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs (2002–2009).

Prior to her Australian Public Service career, Glenys held several executive positions in the ACT Government including Deputy Chief Executive, Department of Disability, Housing and Community Services and Deputy Chief Executive Officer at the Department of Health. She has also held senior positions in the areas of energy, housing and utilities with the ACT Government. Glenys received the Public Service Medal in 2010 for coordinating Australian Government support during the 2009 Victorian bushfires.

Glenys’s arrival at Proximity follows closely on the recruitment of another experienced former APS Secretary, Kerri Hartland.

Welcoming the arrival of Glenys in a Principal Advisor role, Proximity Director, James Dunn, described it as a ‘tremendous coup for the business at the end of such a tumultuous year for the nation’.

‘We are excited to now have two of the most capable and highly respected former federal bureaucrats on our team and while it’s still early days we are already seeing the benefits of their many decades of experience and wisdom,’ James said.

‘We feel the combined breadth of Glenys and Kerri’s experience, skills and networks will assist us to create more opportunities across the government sector and to deliver the highest quality strategic support to our clients.’ he added.

For Glenys, the challenge of joining the private sector and working with the Proximity team were the major drawcards for joining, ‘It is a young, energetic team and the Proximity value set is exactly my value set and every day I’m seeing so much potential in what the team is doing. Hopefully, I can share some of my experience to help the team better understand how government works to get the best possible outcomes for our clients and for Proximity.’

In addition to this primary role, Glenys is a member of the McGrath Foundation Board, Chair of the Advisory Board for Region Media, a counsellor for Dragoman Global, and is on the Board of the Australian Commission on Safety and Quality in Health Care.  She also wants to keep abreast of public administration issues and is a member of the Centre for Strategy and Governance and National Fellow for the Institute of Public Administration Australia.
